What are some reasons for seeking a gray divorce?

On Behalf of | Sep 20, 2022 | Divorce

The number of people aged 50 and older who are seeking a late-in-life divorce is on the rise. This may surprise some of us. After all, what would cause a couple to throw in the towel after so many years of marriage? Well, there are several common reasons why some people choose to pursue a so-called gray divorce.

Empty nests and gray divorce

Many people who have young children get caught up in the day-to-day aspects of raising a family. When a marriage is built around raising children, couples may not think much of what their lives will be once the kids have flown the nest. When that happens, some couples find that their relationship has eroded and for many years they were ultimately staying together for the kids, leading to a late-in-life divorce.

Retirement goals and gray divorce

Many people have dreams about how they will spend their retirement. Some people wish to retire early, while others want to work as long as possible. If you and your spouse are not on the same page when it comes to retirement it can cause friction and resentment, ultimately leading to a late-in-life divorce.

Similarly, sometimes as time goes on our life values change. If our spouse’s life values no longer match our own, we may seek a late-in-life divorce so we can live out our remaining years in the manner we see fit.
